Problem description:

If you are using MSDE database in any UMS product, you can upgrade it to SQL2005 Express, which has some improvements over MSDE (administrative tools, database size limit 4 GB).

Problem solution:

Best practice is to perform in-place upgrade, where setup detects MSDE and it is upgraded using existing settings include databases. In some cases SQL2005 setup is not able to detect MSDE and in-place upgrade is not possible. In such case you must use these directions from Microsoft.
